Obituary

Marius Henrickus Jozef van de Pol Passed away peacefully on July 17,2018 at Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 93 years. His family at his side. Marius was born March 18th 1925 in Herpt NB Netherlands. On February 12, 1953 Marius married the love of his life, Johanna Sluymers and in 1954 the couple immigrated to Canada. They settled in Grande Prairie Alberta where the couple raised their 4 children.

In the early years in Grande Prairie; Marius worked at the plywood plant for several years before obtaining employment with Northern Glass where he worked as a glazier. Marius eventually left Northern Glass and began a lengthy position with the Grande Prairie Public School district where he and his wife Johanna worked side by side  until their retirement in 1989. After his retirement Marius moved with Johanna to Nanaimo BC where they lived for 9 years, moving to Vernon BC in 1998 and eventually Red Deer Alberta in 2005. Shortly after arriving in Red Deer Marius`wife Johanna developed several medical  setbacks this  made it necessary for Marius to look after all the household chores along with any personal needs of Johanna, never once to complain he carried this on until her passing February 16,2010

Marius had a passion for music, he taught himself how to play Accordion as well to play an organ. He would play either instrument almost daily, he  became very proficient on both. Not satisfied with playing two instruments,  he taught himself to play a harmonica. Playing the harmonica facilitated making  his music  mobile and he  would play often while traveling by car on family vacations. or while spending weekends at the family cottage. Marius was also an accomplished carpenter, he loved working with wood. He built several homes for his family over the years in the Grande Prairie area, he`s also known for building windmills, all of which were scale replicas of windmills in his native Holland, Windmills were proudly displayed in his flower gardens, another pastime Marius enjoyed. He always planted and maintained beautiful floral gardens along with incredible vegetable gardens throughout his life, a passion which began in Holland when prior to enlisting in the military he planted a walnut tree in his mothers yard, a tree that flourished for many years.

Marius is lovingly remembered by his four children, son John (Shelley) of Grande Prairie Alberta, Daughter Francisca (Robert) Kelham of Red Deer Alberta, son Richard (Debbie) of Grande Prairie Alberta and daughter Elly (Lorne) Tardiff of Red Deer Alberta. 13 Grandchildren and 34 Great Grandchildren. Marius is also survived by his youngest brother Piet (Sjaan) van de Pol in Heusden NB Netherlands numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and in the Netherlands. He is predeceased by  His Loving wife Johanna, 2 brothers Henk and Franz as well two sisters Jo and Fien.    Funeral Service for Marius van de Pol will be held on Saturday July 21, 2018 at  3:00 PM in the Chapel at Parkland Funeral Home Red Deer Alberta with Ian Hartley officiating.
