It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Christianne ‘Chris’ Marie-Anne Plourde-
Vine, after a long and hard fought battle with diabetes, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on
Friday, October 2, 2020 at the age of 68 years. Chris was born on August 23, 1952 in Kapuskasing,
Ontario, to Valmont and Jacqueline Plourde, also raised by her step-father, Alphonse Dion. She spent
her childhood in Kapuskasing and graduated from Kapuskasing District High School, in 1970. Chris
travelled across Canada as a country singer, in her youth; where her love of travel and singing was
established. Some of her original songs were professionally recorded in studio. Later, she travelled all
over, becoming friends with anyone, and everyone, she met. Having obtained her Bachelor’s Degree
from the University of Calgary, she returned to Northern Ontario; where she was a dedicated teacher for
over twenty years at St. Patrick School in Kapuskasing, and École Publique Renaissance in Timmins,
eventually retiring from her last role as Présidente, AEFO Nord-Est Publique. Everything Chris
accomplished in her career, and in her life, was done with passion and conviction. She enjoyed
gardening, crocheting, knitting, reading, shopping and the Toronto Maple Leafs. She was always
fighting for a cause, fundraising, and debating politics. She always lit up anytime the grandkids visited.
Chris will be lovingly remembered by her husband of eighteen years, Tom Vine of Red Deer, Alberta;
her son, Jeff (Kelly) Plourde of Calgary, Alberta; her stepdaughter, Cindy (Ken) Pye of Timmins,
Ontario and her grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer, Emmett, Jacob and Gabriel. Chris will also be sadly
missed by her brother, Marc Dion (niece Molly Mermaid) of Kingston, Ontario; Jeanne Franche (Fred
and Amy) of Limoges, Ontario as well as numerous other family members and dear friends. A
Celebration of Chris’s Life will be held at Remi Lake in July 2021; her favourite place to spend
summers. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. If
desired, Memorial Donations in Chris’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Regional Health
Foundation at Condolences may be sent or viewed at Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium,
6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.

I first met Chris when she was a student of mine and then began a thirty-year friendship with her, with Jeff, and with Tom. She was matron-of-honour at my wedding. She was an inspiration. I have many stories about Chris; there is, however, one particular story which she would want me to tell. Sometime during our student-teacher relationship, she wrote an essay for me which I graded and handed back to her. That’s how I remember it, anyway. Chris, though, said I didn’t return it but lost the essay and she never let me to forget it. Over the next three decades, whenever we met, she would begin every conversation by saying, “Where’s my essay?” She was insistent that the essay was the best she had ever written and she wanted it back. For twenty-eight years, every time I found an old box of papers I would look through it trying to find Chris’ lost essay. I think I’ll still keep looking, even though I can’t hand it back to her.

Chris was one of the strongest, probably the strongest, person I knew.
I remember, fondly, Sunday dinners at Chrisʼ place, with the children all running about,
and the summer she built a tropical oasis in her back yard, complete with tropical plants
and a kiddy pool. We spent many happy hours there, talking and laughing. One
evening, when we were students, she asked me to come outside. There was a car with
a big bow on it. Sheʼd gone around to fellow students and professors and raised money
to buy me a car. It was incredible. Sheʼs also directly responsible for me getting together
with my husband of 30 years. She loved and protected her son, Jeffrey, like a mother
bear. And how wonderful that she found Tom, the love of her life.
She was passionate about everything she did. She was talented and capable. Her mind
was sharp and smart. She cared about people. She had a big heart and loved with all of
it. She was my good friend and I miss her.

Dear Tom, Jeff and family,
Please accept our deepest condolences. Chris was a beautiful person, she was always welcoming, caring and treated me like one of her own. From the Kaleidoscope days when I walked to school with Jeff. To the days where she invited us to her place in Red Deer for a wonderful thanksgiving dinner. I cherish those moments now more than ever.
