It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Phyllis Mary Ward (nee Cooper) in Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the age of 88 years. Phyllis was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 23, 1930. She was raised in Winnipeg, and was particularly active in sports in High School, and subsequently with the Winnipeg Athletic Association. She held a number of records in Manitoba and one Canadian Record in the Sixty and One Hundred Yard Sprint Events; as well as the Broad Jump, representing Manitoba in both the Olympic Trials held in Montreal, Quebec in 1948, and the British Empire Games in Toronto, Ontario in 1950. Phyllis went on to play both Senior Women’s Basketball and Baseball; and in 2008, she was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1957, Phyllis married Ralph Ward and last year they celebrated their sixtieth Diamond Wedding Anniversary. In her later years, Phyllis was an active Squash Player and also enjoyed Golf, as a member of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club. Phyllis will lovingly be remembered by her husband, Ralph Ward; her sons, David Ward and James Ward; her daughter, Karen Alexander and her six grandchildren, James, Rebecca, Sydney, Michael, Jaden and Ryan. A Celebration of Phyllis’s Life will be held at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club, 4500 Fountain Drive, Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, December 17, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Phyllis’s honour may be made directly to a Charity of the Donor’s choice.
