Obituary for Jane Elizabeth Bechthold

Jane Elizabeth Bechthold (Gowsell) passed away in Red Deer on September 2, 2016 at the age of 57. Jane was born in Calgary, "middle" child of Robert and Elizabeth Gowsell. She attended school in Calgary and enjoyed the summer months spent with older brother Paul and little sister Jill at the family's cottage at the Summer Village of Ghost Lake. As a child, wife and mother she was fortunate to be able to enjoy the cottage for almost 50 years. Jane married Vaughan Bechthold of Calgary on September 20, 1980, at a small country church. Eager to start their own life journey, Jane and Vaughan moved to Red Deer in the Summer of 1981. Jane had a strong maternal instinct and after working in Red Deer for a few years, she decided it was time to start a family. Daughter Kate and sons Ben and Neil all came along within a span of 4 years. It was Jane's desire to have her children quickly so they could be close during their adult years, which has worked out well. Jane had a natural ability as a mom and was very devoted to her kids. She was always very proud of her children and they have turned out to be very deserving of their mother's love. During the course of living in Red Deer and raising their children, Jane and Vaughan were able to forge long lasting relationships with many good people in Red Deer and elsewhere. Jane cherished them all. Once the child rearing years started to wind down, Jane decided to turn to her own personal development. Jane always enjoyed being very "hands on" when it came to her kids' education and school activities. Normandeau School was often a topic of discussion in the Bechthold home while the children were students there. For Jane, it seemed a natural fit to pursue a career in education, which she did with determination and passion. Her hard work paid off and earned her a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Alberta in 2004. At the same time she also earned a Diploma from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary in the area of Music. Jane worked at schools in Blackfalds and Sylvan Lake prior to securing a position with the Red Deer Public School District. Jane thoroughly enjoyed the various positions she held within the Red Deer School District. Her last position was at Normandeau School, so it could be said that over the course of 15 or so years she had come "full circle", starting as a young mom at Normandeau School and finishing her career there as a well respected teacher. In the last weeks of Jane's life she wanted nothing more than to be at her daughter Kate's wedding. The family is so thankful that Jane was able to be there. The family would like to thank all the medical professionals, technicians and support staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, who have advocated for Jane for so long. In addition, thank you is in order to the Red Deer Homecare Network and in particular to Ms.Terry Mousseau, RN for the guidance and compassion during Jane's last days. Jane's memory will be cherished by her husband Vaughan; daughter Kate Epp (Andrew) of Aire Ronge, SK; sons Ben and Neil of Red Deer; father Robert Gowsell and his special friend Betty Stenerson of Calgary; brother Paul Gowsell (Kathi), nephew Sam Gowsell, niece Sophie Gowsell of Calgary; sister Jill Vargo (Fred), nephews Will Vargo, Ellis Vargo and Tom Vargo of Calgary. She was predeceased by her mother Elizabeth Gowsell. A celebration of Jane's life will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Knox Presbyterian Church, 4718 Ross Street, Red Deer, at 1:00 pm with Minister Wayne Reid officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that those who would like to, make a charitable donation to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary.
