Obituary for Daphne Phyllis Payne (Patmore)

Mrs. Daphne Phyllis Payne of Lacombe, Alberta, passed away at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, Lacombe, Alberta on Monday, June 27, 2016 at the age of 92 years. Daphne was born on August 26, 1923 at Aldershot, England. She was the eldest of three girls and was raised in the Frimley Green until moving to Canada. Like many who experienced World War II, Daphne had a colourful life to say the least. She joined the National Fire Service in February 1943, and met the love of her life, William Payne, a Canadian soldier a month later. After a brief courtship, the two wed August 7, 1943. Daphne continued in the fire service until Bill recommended in the spring of 1945, she should make her application to go to Canada. Daphne set out on the Duchess of Bedford May 17, 1945 and arrived at the infamous Pier 21 in Halifax ten days later, with many other War Brides. From there, an epic journey by train to Rocky Mountain House began. Bill joined her in late September. The two moved to Lacombe in 1946, and then to the Sargent District, east of Clive in 1949, where they worked hard to clear the land and establish their farm and raise their family – William Vaughn, Veronica, George, Chester and Andrew. Daphne and Bill, sold the farm to George in 1977, and moved into a mobile home on their original half section. They retired to Lacombe in 1985 and moved to a smaller home in 1992. She kept busy as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion in addition to bowling until her knee wouldn’t allow it any more. She also kept busy visiting with friends and her growing family. Daphne will be lovingly remembered by her husband of seventy-two years, William; her children, William Vaughn (Barb) of Blackfalds, Veronica Grover of Lacombe, George (Gail) of Clive, and Chester (Marie) of Clive; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; as well as numerous other family and friends. Daphne was predeceased by a son, Andrew Kevin and a son-in-law, Jeffrey Grover. A Memorial Service will be held at Parkside Alliance Church, 5846 – 50 Avenue, Lacombe, Alberta on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
