Obituary for Joyce Illa Smith (Norris)

Joyce Illa Smith (Norris)
With deep sadness, the family of Joyce Smith announces the peaceful passing of our mom and grandmother on Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Red Deer Hospice in Alberta. Mom is lovingly remembered by children, Richard (Janet), Dawn, and David (Maureen); grandchildren, Ethan, Gabrielle, Donovan and Mariah; sister, Ruth (Ed); sisters-in-law, Susan, Helen, and Tillie; special nieces, Merle and Lenore; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and David Miller. Mom was born in Morris, Manitoba on February 1, 1934, the youngest of twelve children for Freeman and Olive Norris (nee Langton). Being the youngest, she was close to all her siblings and became the family historian over the years. Family was always first to mom and remembering birthdays and anniversaries with a card and a phone call was important to her. When she was ten, her family moved from Morris to Winnipeg, living in the St. Vital and Centennial areas. Mom loved to sing and had fond memories of her time in the school choir. In the 1950s, mom worked as an operator and shift supervisor for MTS, and for BC Tel, after a move to Vancouver. After returning to Manitoba, she married Donald Smith of Otterburne-West on June 15, 1963. They farmed with their family until dad’s retirement in 1977 and the family moved to St. Pierre-Jolys. Mom remained there until a few years after dad’s death in 1995 and she once again moved to Winnipeg. Mom loved to cook and was a fabulous baker! We could always expect a homemade cake for our birthdays. She shared her special skills with many 4-Hers in the Otterburne-West 4-H Club as a leader in cooking. Gardening was also something she enjoyed, and having the fruits of her labour on our table each winter. She loved flowers and especially her peonies and tulips. She was involved in the Otterburne-West Ladies club and also La Boutique the second hand store in St. Pierre-Jolys. In later years, she finally learned how to play cribbage (a Norris family staple) and she and dad enjoyed tournaments around south-eastern Manitoba. Until arthritis prevented her from doing so, knitting and crocheting were her favourite crafts, and she created everything from afghans to even family pet booties. She was an organizer, and soon had the seniors’ club at her Winnipeg apartment building hopping with weekly bingo and rummoli nights. Being called “Granny” was, by far, the highlight of mom’s life. All four of her grandchildren filled her heart with love and joy. Mom’s last year was spent in Alberta, where she lived with son, David until she required greater care. Her final days were spent peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice. Special thank you to the staff in Aurora House at the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury. A Celebration of Joyce's life will take place on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Dr., Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Red Deer Hospice, 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer, AB T4R 3S6 www.reddeerhospice.com or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com.
