Iris May Meeres of Red Deer, Alberta passed away peacefully at Bethany CollegeSide, Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the age of 92 years. Iris was born on May 16, 1922 in Ferndale, South Wales. She was predeceased by her husband Alexander Jolly Meeres in 1950. Iris met her husband at Salsbury Plains, England and they married on September 14, 1944. Iris and Alexander came to Canada in 1945 and lived in Ontario. After the early loss of her husband, she moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1952 and then to Red Deer in 1978. Iris was a happy, fun loving and very caring woman who loved to play bingo. For many years she volunteered at Normandeau School where she was known by everyone as “Grandma Iris”. Iris had a very strong and independent spirit which carried her through good and tough times. Her determination and will helped her to care for and raise her family on her own. Iris was a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a great great grandmother who will be very deeply missed. Iris will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Ann Hyndman of Cochrane, and son, Phillip (Donna) Meeres of Red Deer; her grandchildren, Diana (Blair) Heinzlmeir of Red Deer, Kim Stewart of Cochrane and Nadine LesStrange (Darren) of Red Deer; her great grandchildren, Alexander, Alexis, Mackenzie, Morgan, Paige and Nevaeh and one great great grandchild, Kale. A Memorial Service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Iris’s honor may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and N.W.T. at www.alzheimer.ca/en/ab.
