Lorrie was such a fantastic person to work with. His upbeat and energetic personality was contagious to a homesick crew working away from their loved ones and comfy beds. I worked wih Lorrie on a few out of town projects and one memory that sticks in my head like super-glue is the job for Methanex Kitamat.
Lorrie was running the project, which was more than a month in length. I was on the project for 3 weeks and, by about day 6, I was so homesick! This was the fall of 1996, I had just been married that year and was the only girl on the project (I was working in the office lab). In 1996 not everyone walked around with cells in their pockets; rather, the only communication out was a very expensive-to-use sat phone. I was having a particularly rough day (ask Denis Fourny about my $36 paycheck...) and was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Lorrie suggested I go ahead & use the phone to call home. REALLY???! I was so excited that I got to use it. Only, after I'd finished taking to the family I was in such a state of tears; missing them & hating being away even more. I was leaning sideways so that Lorrie wouldn't see that I'd begun tearing up and pretended to be really scrutinizing something that I'd been working on; but he knew I was upset for sure. He quietly left the trailer to give me some space and then returned about 20 minutes later with a little bag in hand. He reached around me and laid the bag in front of me on the desk and simply said, "Cheryl said Hawkins Cheezies make everything better." and went and sat down to work again.
He had gone and searched the plant site for a vending machine to get me that bag of cheezies. That's how I remember Lorrie; understanding, kind, thoughtful and always with a ready smile and a pat on the back.
Lorrie deserved many complements himself and he was always ready to dole out a sincere one as well.
God bless and rest in peace.
