In the Summer of '73

In the summer of 1973, my husband Ric Davies, my son, Krish, and I decided to take very long bike ride from Red Deer to Sylvan Lake to visit Aunt Dot and Uncle Dode.

It was a hot day, and with my son in his bicycle seat on the back it was tough pedaling up the hills.

Halfway there, we stopped for a rest and some water. My son, Krish,  who was then two years old, said very impatiently, “Let’s go! Don’t stop!”

We pointed out that we were tired and needed a rest.

He said, “I not tired. Let’s go.”  Easy to say for the one who is sitting in the seat all of the way there.

When we got to our destination, we were received  with hugs and smiles. They were both surprised that we had actually biked all of the way from Red Deer.

Uncle Dode went out to inspect our bikes.  Aunt Dot put the kettle on and got out enough snacks for a small army. We really appreciated it as we were ravenous and parched.

We all enjoyed a great visit and when we were ready to go, they both protested. “No stay for supper!”

We pointed out it was getting dark and we didn’t want to ride that highway after the sun set.

Typical of their hospitality, they fed us dinner and then Uncle Dode surprised us by putting our bikes in the back of his car and driving us back to Red Deer.

It was, and will always be, a treasured memory for me; and I am happy to report, my son who was two then, still remembers that trip at forty-three today.

Bless you both Uncle Dode and Aunt Dot!

Love,

Ric, Wendy and Krish Davies
