Obituary for Thelma Mary May Black (Horsfield)

Mrs. Thelma Mary May Black passed away peacefully in her sleep at Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the age of 95 years. Thelma was born on May 25, 1924 at Toronto, Ontario. She was the youngest of four. Thelma had a typical fun filled life growing up in Toronto, Ontario, and helping in the family business. She loved spending her summers at the cottage at Lake Simcoe. She met the love of her life, Ed and they were married in 1944. They raised their family of four children in Toronto and London, Ontario, before moving out to Calgary, Alberta in 1955. Family was Thelma’s number one passion. She was a wonderful homemaker and loving mother, who enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, cooking, music, dancing and of course parties. She loved to host family dinners and enjoyed the laughter and conversations, of which there were many! Thelma’s fondest memories were camping, travelling and being Arizona “Snowbirds”. It is this love of the outdoors, mixed with family and friends that will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thelma will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen Stirling, her son, Alan (Laura) Black; her grandchildren, Noel (Erin Marie), Erin Leanne (Bryan), Carson (Tatyana) and her great grandchildren, Liam, Julia, Sierra and Gabriel. She will also be sadly missed by her sister-in-law, Barbara Horsfield; her nieces, Joan, Janice, Jacqueline, Jane, Diane and Sharon; her nephews, Jim and Jeff of Alberta and Jim, John, Rick, David, Chris, Brian and Marc of Ontario; as well as many other family members and dear friends. Thelma was predeceased by her husband, Ed (2007), a son, Bill (2008), a nephew, David (2010), a son-in-law, Norman Stirling M.D. (2012), a daughter, Debbie (2013) and her siblings, Beatrice, Gordon and Frederick. Her family would like to extend “Special Thank You” to the Staff at Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer during the past four years, for their wonderful care and kindness.

Your life was a gift, and your memory a treasure.
You are loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
