QUINES, Rosita
1933 – 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Rosita Capiendo Quines, beloved wife of sixty-four years, of Mr. Leonardo Mendoza Quines of Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at the age of 86 years. They remained by each other’s side, as best friends and soulmates until death. Rosita and Leonardo brought their children to Canada in 1971. Their love of Christ and devotion to their family marked a life filled with love and security; a home where the most important message was that faith, love, joy, respect, and laughter are the ingredients for a life worth living. They believed in God and in family. Rosita leaves behind her four children, who miss her so much and who love her, and are so grateful for the love and guidance she provided: Ronard Quines and Dory (nee Napod), Leslie Quines and Rose Marie (nee Connors), Marly Barsh (nee Quines) and Thomas, and Arlyn Quines; her grandchildren, Ritchie Quines, Michael Quines, Christopher Quines, Catherine Salomons (nee Quines), and Lisa Quines and her ten beautiful great grandchildren. Also mourning, are her brother, Rodrigo Capiendo in California, USA, and her sister, Ruth (Minda) Palmero (nee Capiendo) of the Philippines. Her siblings, Ruben Capiendo, Remedios (Meding) Capiendo and Resurreccion (Ancing) Rondael (nee Capiendo) predeceased Rosita. Mama, you taught us how to be brave, how to be tough, how to be tenacious, how to be kind and generous, and compassionate and how to reach for happiness. And you taught us how we can reach for the highest star and expect to receive it because that is what you did. You didn't know the word "no". When others thought it impossible, you persisted and through your vision and hard work and devotion, you provided us with a better life and limitless possibilities. What an extraordinary accomplishment for a girl who came from such humble beginnings. We love you, mama, we miss you. If desired, Memorial Donations in Rosita’s honor may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Canada at or to Diabetes Canada at

Rosita was my mother-in-law for 20 years. It hardly seems to have been more than a couple of years; how time flies. Yes, time flies and then we lose our loved ones too suddenly. That is the human condition. So we must learn to value our loved ones while we can.

Rosita gladly accepted me into her family. Even though I was not Filipino, nor Canadian, nor Adventist. She only knew that her daughter loved me very much, and that I loved her daughter very much. And that was enough. Enough for her to open her heart to me and admit me into her family's fold.

Love is what Rosita was about, and love was sufficient for her above all other characteristics. Rosita loved her family... loved her own mother, her 3 beloved sisters, and her brother. She loved her husband of almost-65 years, Leonardo, with all her heart and might and soul, and would call to him in the night. She loved her 4 children with a fierce protective, yet tender, mother's love, imbuing all with lessons on how to be good and kind and compassionate. She loved all her children's spouses, being generous to all. And she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These young ones always brought joy to Rosita; I could easily see that myself.

Rosita gave me the most precious gift I've been given in my own wife, Rosita's daughter, Marly. Marly is indeed the most loved person I have had in my life. She is the person she is due to being Rosita's daughter. I love my wife, Marly. And I love Rosita for bringing her to me. Thank you Rosita. God Bless you. -Tom
