Obituary for Randy Mark Westby

WESTBY, Randy
1961 – 2022
Mr. Randy Mark Westby passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at the age of 61 years. Randy was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was adopted at two months of age by his parents. The first fifteen years of his life were spent in Rosetown, Saskatchewan. His family then moved to Regina for his dad’s work, where Randy graduated from High School at Campbell Collegiate. After graduation, he took the Emergency Medical Technician Course at The Wascana Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences and graduated in 1984. Randy spent fourteen years working as an Emergency Medical Technician in LaRonge, Saskatoon and North Battleford – the latter, is where he met Margaret, and later married her on August 24, 1991. In 1990, Randy injured his back and could no longer be an Emergency Medical Technician but remained involved in the safety of others throughout his career. He taught Safety Courses, particularly to companies involved in the Oil and Gas Industry, First Aid Courses, and he was Deputy Fire Chief of the Delisle Volunteer Fire Department, while the family lived there. In 2005, Randy and his family moved to Red Deer, where they continue to reside. In March of 2019, he started to work at Precision Prosthetics, where he was able to help others who have also experienced amputations. Randy enjoyed life to the fullest. His hobbies and interests were many. He was fascinated by the wild west; he and Margaret took part in “train robberies” as part of the Guns of the Golden West at Aspen Crossing. He had a lifelong love for photography, enjoyed riding both motorized and pedal bikes, and anything associated with the wild west, including horses and firearms. In 2017, he bravely made the choice to have his leg amputated below the knee, but he never let that stop him from enjoying his hobbies. After losing his leg, Randy took up League Bowling. Shelby from Heritage Lanes showed him how to bowl with only one good leg and their team’s name became “Stumpys” and will forever stay named so. Later, he had triple bypass heart surgery and recovered very quickly. During covid, Randy decided to learn how to play the flute and took lessons from Thomas Bauer. He said he sounded like a cat whose tail was stepped on, but he improved very quickly! Randy was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was beloved by them in return. He had a gift of making friends and everyone enjoyed his storytelling and sense of humor. His absence will be felt by many. Randy will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret, his three children, Maureen (Cameron) Burant, Tabitha, and Mahlon (Ally), and his grandchildren, Zachary (fifteen), Cameron (eleven), Braxtyn (two). He will also be sadly missed by his sister, Cindy van Seters and his mother-in-law, Menetta Charabin. Randy was predeceased by his parents, Mahlon and Pauline Westby, a brother, Eldon Westby, and his father-in-law, Walter Charabin. A Memorial Service will be held at The First Church of The Nazarene, 2 McVicar Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, November 5 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta.
