Obituary for Melford James Schumacher

Mr. Melford James Schumacher passed away peacefully at Harmony Care Cottage, Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at the age of 84 years. The family would like to give a special thanks to all the staff for the great care and kindness shown to Melford during his final days. Melford was born on February 22, 1937 in Delisle, Saskatchewan and was one of six children to Harvey and Helen (Zimmer) Schumacher. He grew up in the Delisle area on the family farm. In 1959, he married his loving wife, Wilma Irene Willen; the woman that would stand beside him, through for over 62 years. Melford will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Wilma, his son, Kim (Simone) and their children Philip and Jillian, his daughter, Wendy and her children Tessa, Kelli and Jack, his son, Don (Leslie) and their children, Landon, Tyler and Nicholas and his son, Lyle (Tracey) and their children, Christian, Alison and Bryce. He will also be deeply missed by his brother, Bernie (Laurie), his sister, Mary Ann (Randy) Buschmann and his sisters-in-law, Hilde (Jerome) Schumacher and Elana (Philip) Schumacher. Melford was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Helen, his brothers, Jerome and Philip and his sister, Pauline (Russell Clark). Melford was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and Knights of Columbus. He had a passion for business and a true entrepreneurial spirit. He worked for McLeod’s Hardware in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for a few years and then in 1968 he purchased Brown’s Mobile Homes and soon after purchased the Travelaire dealership in Saskatoon. After almost ten years in the RV business, he moved on to his next business adventure in Red Deer, Alberta in 1977 to start franchising muffler shops in Alberta. That soon evolved into a business with two of his sons joining him in the muffler manufacturing and auto parts distribution business in Red Deer in 1981. After retiring from the business, golfing became a big passion for him and Wilma, with many great friends at the Red Deer Golf & Country Club and winters spent in Palm Desert, California. Melford was equally passionate about spending time with his family. He enjoyed snowmobiling, summer camping and boating trips to Waskesiu and Mara Lake, golf trips and ski trips to Banff, fishing trips in northern Saskatchewan and so many family Christmas holidays spent in Maui. Melford loved being with his family and was such a proud father with a big heart. He was always there for his children to help out in any way he could. His children all referred to him as “Fauza” and he will be greatly missed by his family and all that knew him. A Funeral Service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Melford’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, 16th Floor, Toronto, Ontario, M4R 1K8 or to www.alzheimer.ca.
