Obituary for Marilynn Katherena Sept

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Marilynn Katherena Sept on June 6, 2022 in Red Deer, Alberta at the age of 86 years. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, and friend to many. Marilynn mastered all of these roles with loving kindness and enthusiasm.

The career that Marilynn chose and perfected was managing a busy household of six different schedules, and she did it with ease. Along the way, she managed to find time to make sure everyone’s likes, wants and desires were met. This included learning how to make the many favourite German dishes Larry had grown up with, while creating a style of her own. She could prepare a wonderful meal for her own family and was able to quickly adjust to accommodate the many ‘strays’ that showed up unannounced. She did all this with a smile on her face and always made everyone feel welcome.

Another talent of Marilynn’s was to manage the many job transfers that went along with Larry’s career. These were always short notice, but Marilynn could pack the house, make a dinner and set up the new house without breaking a sweat. The transfers took the family to Empress, Maple Creek, St. Michael, Bindloss, Derwent, Bassano, Drumheller, until a final move was made to Red Deer.

Her passions, shared with her loving husband Larry, were first and foremost her family. Whether it was figure skating, hockey, baseball, or marching bands, Marilynn was always there to support any endeavour her family chose. Camping, curling, travelling, and card games took up a lot of her time. In her later years her favourite pastime was watching sports on TV. Marilynn always had trouble deciding whether she liked hockey, curling, baseball, tennis or poker so she decided that what she simply liked what was on TV at the time.

Marilynn also had other passions which included pets; those she chose and those that were brought into the the house by her children. Some of these pets were unconventional like a snake and a ferret. But her favourite, and long time companion, was her beloved cat, Smokie.

Marilynn had many hobbies including knitting, needle- point, cross-stitch, and crafting hundreds of felt Christmas ornaments for the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many others.
Marilynn is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Dave) Smith of Castlegar, British Columbia; her daughter, Sandy Thomson (Darryl) of Olds, Alberta; her son, Les (Pam) Sept of Vernon British Columbia, and her son, Sheldon (Heather) Sept of Lethbridge, Alberta. Along with eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, her brother, Vance (Rita) Elder of Calgary, Alberta; and her sister, Maureen Heckbert of St Albert, Alberta.

Marilynn was predeceased by her husband, Larry Sept; her mother and her father, Rene and Vance Elder; and her son-in-law, Dick Thomson.
