Mrs. Lorraine Fay Dennis (nee Peterson) peacefully entered the presence of her Lord Jesus on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the age of 91 years. Lorraine was born October 2, 1930 in Provost, Alberta. She was the third child of five born to Mamie and Carl Peterson. She grew up on the family farm near Metiskow, Alberta, until her family moved to a farm near Camrose, Alberta when Lorraine was eleven years old. She attended New Salem School up to Grade 9 and completed her High School in Camrose, graduating in 1948. Lorraine entered Nursing Training at the University of Alberta in early 1949, and graduated in 1952, with a Nursing Diploma, along with her Registered Nursing (RN) Designation. She began her career at Aberhart Memorial Sanitorium in Edmonton, Alberta in September of 1952, and then attended Prairie Bible Institute for one year. She then went on to work at St. Mary’s Hospital and Rose Haven in Camrose, Alberta. Lorraine met Hugh Dennis at the wedding rehearsal for Lorraine’s sister, Doris and Hugh’s brother, Ben in 1952. Lorraine and Hugh were married on June 18, 1955, and together raised four sons. Lorraine continued her Nursing Career with the Government of Alberta (Department of Welfare) in the Metis Colonies for the three of four years, while Hugh taught in the Metis Schools. While Hugh was enrolled at the University of Alberta for further teacher training, Lorraine worked in the General Hospital in Calgary in the Nursery. The family moved to Homestead Coulee, thirty miles south of Hanna, in 1960, where Hugh taught, and drove school bus for three years. In 1963, the family moved to Hanna and Lorraine worked at the Hanna Hospital, and Hugh taught Jr. High School. The family then moved to Red Deer in 1966. Lorraine returned to her Nursing Career in late 1969, after spending three years at home with the children. From 1969 to 1986, she held positions at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre in Pediatrics and Pharmacy, Michener Centre, Valley Park Manor Nursing Home, and for the last three years of her career at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre (Psychiatric Ward). Lorraine was an excellent cook, making meals for Hugh and her four growing boys. She baked bread, butterhorn buns (a family favorite), and the best cinnamon buns in Red Deer. Apple pie was a usual dessert on the table following a delicious meal. She provided desserts to church functions and there were never any leftovers to bring home. She loved to sew, and knit/crochet blankets and baby clothes, and one of her favorite projects were afghans that she lovingly made and gave to her grandchildren at their weddings. She was very instrumental in leading all the boys to the Lord and teaching them in the Gospel of Christ. Her ministry was one of caring for others, especially her family. She always made family a priority, over and above her own personal concerns. She modelled a presence of empathy, and quiet servitude, and was an impeccable host while she was able to do so. Entire family gatherings for meals at Christmas and other special holidays were wonderful occasions that she enjoyed tremendously, including all the preparations for such events. Upon retirement, Hugh and Lorraine were able to spend time camping and especially enjoyed those occasions with Lorraine’s sister, Vivan, and brother-in-law, Edward. Lorraine and Hugh were able to travel to Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Sweden (to visit Lorraine’s relatives), and to Prince Edward Island (to visit Hugh’s relatives). They also took trips to Alaska and to the Yukon. Perhaps the most enjoyable and enlightening trip was to Israel, to walk where Jesus walked. The support of mission work gave Lorraine a great sense of satisfaction, especially the work of radio-broadcasting the gospel to those that had little else in the way of introduction to Christ Jesus. It was her strong desire to see all her grandchildren come to a strong faith in Jesus Christ, and that one day, she would meet them all in heaven. Lorraine will be lovingly remembered by her husband of sixty-seven years, Hugh, her sons, Thomas of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Stanley (Sharon) of Calgary, Alberta, Randal (Karen) and Wade (Jody) of Red Deer, Alberta, her ten grandchildren and her seventeen great grandchildren. She will also be sadly missed by her sisters, Doris Dennis of Lacombe, Alberta, Vivian Carlson of Camrose, Alberta, her brother, Dennis (Ardis) Peterson of Camrose, Alberta, and her sister-in-law, Joyce Fair of Edmonton, Alberta. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Mamie Peterson, a brother, Gordon Peterson, a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Dennis, and her first born grandson, Steven David Dennis.
