Obituary for Lexie Hilda Slauenwhite (Hiltz)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Lexie Hilda Slauenwhite (Hiltz) our dear mom, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who went peacefully to her heavenly home on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at the age of 93 years. Mom was born June 14, 1927 in Nictaux, Nova Scotia, to Wardlow (Dordo) Hiltz and Jenny Coleman (Taylor). Mom grew up as the eldest in her family and she loved her siblings and parents dearly. She shared countless memories of ‘Dordo’ that touched us all and when in the presence of her siblings, their mother’s humour exuded from each one of them.
Mom’s greatest joys in life were her family, she raised nine of her own children, several foster children and countless children she cared for independently; as well as at the YMCA and then The Family Resource Centre in Red Deer, Alberta; where she worked with children and young mothers until she retired in her seventies.
Mom spoke often of her fondest memories as a child; she absolutely loved skating on the meadow with the siblings and dear friends, Evelyn and Madeline. She was able to continue skating later in life and was a member of the Silver Blades from Red Deer, Alberta; where she loved to skate the long beautiful strides with a partner, they travelled to different places across Alberta to skate.
Mom loved all kinds of music, this was evident when she would take an interest and listen to “KISS” with her eldest grandson, Simon. In later years, she was a part of a group called the Ho-Downers. She played the kazoo and sang. The group would travel to seniors’ homes and hospitals and entertain; she loved serving people this way.
Mom felt very blessed to have been able to enjoy both the ocean and the Rocky Mountains in her lifetime. In earlier years, we had countless picnics at the Bay of Fundy, went to Queensland and Hubbards Beaches and as a younger teenager, she looked forward going to Margaretville. She loved her trips w daughter Joselyn, to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. I’m sure she kept “Bill’s Store” in business.
Once mom moved to Alberta in November of 1988, she was able to enjoy the Rockies on a regular basis. One of her first trips to Jasper, with daughter Joanne and Frank, she spotted a mountain goat way up on a rock ledge, she was so proud that she saw that. Mom loved travel and became very independent in doing so. Her first experience was going back to Ottawa with her brother Lester and Doreen, one summer and flying home alone. Uncle Lester treated her like gold while there and she was quite tickled that while at the airport to catch her flight home she met Gerald Reagan (Nova Scotia Premier) and hearing that this was her first flight, he escorted her onto the plane with him. Mom later became a seasoned flier with summer flights home to Nova Scotia, and trips to Florida, California, Las Vegas, and a trip she planned and booked with her friend Jenny to Branson, Missouri. They had an incredible time together and it gave her great joy to share that experience. Mom also traveled across Canada twice and experienced all the major cities along the way.
Mom’s strong faith and love of the Lord brought her through the trials in her life, including losing Dad (Gerald Slauenwhite) in 1976 and her daughter, Barb McGill in 2015. Her joy in the Lord was so evident and she loved to share this joy with all she met. More than anything, Mom wanted everyone had to know the love of Christ and to have a relationship with him, she strived to share this through teaching Sunday School, Bible Studies, being in choirs, and just being herself.
Mom leaves to celebrate her life, her daughter, Joanne (Frank) Caldwell of Kingston, Nova Scotia, grandchildren, Simon and Jannette, her daughter Joselyn (John) Craig of Chester, Nova Scotia, grandchildren, Peter and Alison, Angela and Kevin; her daughter Sharon (Peter) Guscott of Red Deer, Alberta; her daughter Giselle (Jim) Hayes of Nictaux, Nova Scotia, grandchildren, Neil, Josh and Kyle; her daughter April (Mike) Illsley of Canmore, Alberta, grandchildren, Daniel and Kristina, Katie and Justin, Jenna and Derek, and Jordan; her son Edmund (Jane) Slauenwhite of Clarence, Nova Scotia, grandchildren, Jeff, Kristin, and Will; her son Perry (Janice) Slauenwhite of Kentville, Nova Scotia, grandchildren Adam and Katie; her son Vince (Cindy) Slauenwhite of Vernon, British Columbia; and her sister Marilyn and Alison Hasson of Kelowna, British Columbia; eleven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
