Obituary for Kelly Ruth Stewart

STEWART, Kelly
January 30, 1963 – February 1, 2023
Mrs. Kelly Ruth Stewart passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at the age of 60 years. Kelly was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and spent her childhood years with her parents and brother on a small farm in Gorlitz, Saskatchewan (near Yorkton). They moved to Roblin, Manitoba, where she finished High School at home a year earlier than her peers. With her parents’ permission she moved to Edmonton when she was seventeen. She started her working career as a Data Clerk with Alberta Health and had a second job in the evenings as the YMCA Receptionist, where she met Rick Stewart in 1986. They had their first and what would become their forever date on June 20 of that year and have been together ever since. Kelly attended the University of Alberta from 1986 to 1989, finishing her four-year Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics (with Honors Distinction) one semester early. Kelly worked as a Nutritionist in Fort St. John, British Columbia for the remainder of that Academic year and completed her Registered Dietitian qualification at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital in 1990. From 1990 to 1992, she was the Director of Dietetics in Vegreville, Alberta. In 1993, with scholarships from the prestigious Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, she completed her Masters of Public Administration (with Honors List Distinction). The next four years lead to her success, culminating as Director of Utilization on the Saskatoon Health District’s Board. Eleven years after her first date with Rick, they wed on February 14, 1997, so he wouldn’t forget the date or Valentine’s Day. Kelly enrolled in Law School at the University of Calgary from 1998 to 2001 and headed the Jessup Debating Team in her final year. After articling and working with Sharon J. Dalton at Edy Dalton Law in Calgary from 2001 to 2002, she was called to the Bar and admitted in June 2002. She then started her Private Practice at that same firm. By 2016, she moved her Practice to Rowanoak Law in Sylvan Lake, Alberta and continued practicing there until 2022. Her qualifications also included those as a Law Mediator 2010 to 2022. Together, Kelly and Rick purchased virgin property in the Sylvan Lake area, where they built their dream house and were finally able to call it home in 2016. Kelly was an active member in the various communities where she lived, including serving as Board Member – Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce in 2018 and President, Vice President and Treasurer of BNI Elite (Business Networking International) in Calgary from 2003 to 2013. Kelly loved cats, watching veterinary reality shows, practicing Family Law, mentoring junior colleagues and parties around the bonfire. She was an accomplished seamstress and devoted Christian. Kelly will be lovingly remembered by her husband and life partner, Rick Stewart, her brother, Kim (Janet) Hudema, her sisters-in-law, Sherryl Stewart, Kathy Stewart, Pamela Stewart and Sandy (Rob) Hadwen, her brothers-in-law, Brian (Cindy) Watt and Troy (Tanya) Stewart, along with numerous nieces, nephews and one grandniece. Kelly was predeceased by her parents, Ed and Gladys and her niece, Jennifer. A Celebration of Kelly’s Life will be held at the Alliance Community Church, 4407 - 47 Avenue, Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. We look forward to having you share some of your favorite memories, funny or inspiring stories in Kelly’s honor.
