On Sunday, July 26, 2020, Jozsef Frank Tony ‘Joe’ Schmidt, loving husband, father and papa, passed away at the age of 81 years. Joe was born on March 21, 1939 in Budapest, Hungary, to Maria and Pal Schmidt. He immigrated to Canada in 1956, and came to Red Deer, making it his permanent home. On August 13, 1960, Joe married Doreen Ann Huget. Together they raised three children. Joe was a Master Machinist and had a passion for creating anything with metal; he loved to build hot rods and jet boats, and was well known in those groups in Red Deer and beyond.

Joe considered his friends to be the same as family and he had a large Canadian family. Family was important to him; he always kept in touch with his family in Hungary and wanted to hear from his kids and grandkids to find out what they were doing. Family was one of his proudest achievements. He would often say “look at what this one foreigner did” with a huge smile on his face. He was so very loved and will be greatly missed by us all.

Joe will be lovingly remembered by his children, Becky (Rick) Stryker, Joe (Rhonda) Schmidt and Darcie (Sara) Schmidt; his grandchildren, Jordan, Sunny, Randi, Joshua, Rylie, Sophie and Brady; and his four great grandchildren, Jaxon, Kallan, Evalyn, and Amelia. He is also survived by his sister, Ila Szűcs and her family in Hungary. Joe was predeceased by his parents in Hungary, and his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Doreen in 2019.

Joe’s family is asking that anyone who wants to drive by through the Alto Reste Cemetery for a memorial parade (hot rod, or in your vehicle), the parade will be on Saturday August 8, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Family will be there to see you.

I met Joe through my partner Soren Hansen. Joe would always show up at our door at Christmas with gifts of wine and good cheer!
Over the past few years I came to know how loved and cherished he was to his family and circle of friends.
Joe passed away on what would have been Soren's 75th birthday. I'm sure the two of them will be glad to be spending some time together again.
My thoughts and heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of Joe's loved ones.

After meeting Joe while working for Bob Parker, Joe and I have known each other for a long time. Both of us were foreigners trying to get a start in this great country. We will all miss you Joe, and will remember the great times together. Jerry Alderson.

My deepest sympathy goes out to all of Joe's family. My husband, Garry Tetz, was a close friend of Joe's and enjoyed their many visits over the years. He thought the world of Joe and talked of him often. Garry would always say, "Ol' Joe and I speak the same language." A sad loss of a wonderful and interesting man. Paulette Gelinas
