Obituary

Mr. Edward Duncan Svederus was born on July 31, 1937 in Red Deer, Alberta and passed away on Monday, July 6, 2020 at the Red Deer Hospice at the age of 82 years.

Edward will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Fay; son, Randy (Joan) and grandchildren, Sara (Andy), great grandson, Benjamin; Matthew; son, Barry (Carla), grandchildren, Justin (Lindsey), Ryan, and Bryce; daughter, Shannon (Wayne), grandchildren, Brittney (Jeremy), great grandchildren, Hannah, Jaxson; Alisha (Michael), great grandchildren, Ainsley, Ezra, Judah; sister, Mernie (Jerry) Alderson, brother, Bill (Kay) Svederus, and brother, Keith (Jo-Ann) Svederus; brother-in-law, Raymond (Darlene); as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Edward was predeceased by his parents, Sven and Kate Svederus.

Edward was born in Red Deer, Alberta and was raised on a farm in the Valley Center community east of Red Deer. It was here where Ed went to school and then began working on farms in the area. He became a heavy-duty equipment operator for various companies, but it was during his time working at Michener Center where he met the love of his life, Fay Rowe. They were married on April 20, 1963 in Redcliff, Alberta. Ed returned to working road construction and Blackfalds became their home while they raised their family. Ed was proud of where he lived and served as the mayor for numerous years. He was later hired by the City of Red Deer; where he eventually worked as the Superintendent of Roads until he retired. Ed shared his passion for life with all who surrounded him. He found tremendous joy outside camping, fishing, cross country skiing, and canoeing. He embraced team comradery and his love for activity prompted him to play hockey and slow-pitch into his later years. Woodworking became his pastime and cherished pieces will be part of his legacy.

Ed loved his family. His playful spirit deeply connected him to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Those who knew Ed respected him for his work ethic, his sense of adventure, his genuine kindness, and his warm, welcoming smile. Ed will be missed by all of his family and many friends; as when you were with him he was so present and made you feel so loved.

Due to Alberta Health’s gathering restrictions, a Private Memorial will be held in Ed’s honor. Memorial Donations in Ed’s memory are welcomed to the following charities: the Red Deer Hospice Society, Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta, and the MS Society of Canada.
