Obituary

Dr. Raymond Michael ‘Ray’ Hulyk passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the age of 79 years. Ray was born on March 17, 1940 in Waugh, Alberta, where he lived until moving on to University. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta (Class of ’64), he married Gloria Margaret Fjeldheim in Camrose, Alberta on September 26, 1964. He went on to serve as Captain and Flight Surgeon R.C.A.F. at CFB Namao, Alberta, then at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta for the CF-104 Starfighters. In 1968, he moved to Red Deer to start his practice in Family Medicine. Over the next fifty years, Dr. Hulyk worked at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, the Associate Clinic and finally at the St. Mary Clinic. He also provided locum coverage to many rural communities, such as Vilna and Coronation. After delivering over five thousand babies and fifty-three dutiful years to his patients, he retired in 2017. Ray served on many organizations dedicated to medicine; including the Alberta Medical Association, where in 1990, he served as President. Ray was a proud member of the Red Deer Kinsmen and K-40 clubs, an avid golfer at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club, and a volunteer at many local sporting events, including the recent Canada Winter Games. Ray served on many charities in the area, and helped found the Red Deer Chapters of both the MS Society of Canada and Cystic Fibrosis Canada. He continued his passion of helping others by returning to school at the age of 77, at Red Deer College to pursue a Degree in Psychology, with a focus in Seniors Advocacy, while volunteering at the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre. Ray is survived by his loving wife of fifty five years, Gloria Hulyk, his three sons, Michael (Shauna) Hulyk of Red Deer, Alberta, Robert (Marijke) Hulyk of Steveston, British Columbia, and Tim (Chelsey) Hulyk of Edmonton, Alberta; and his five grandchildren; Maren, Katie, Hannah, Raelyn, and Benjamin, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He will also be sadly missed by his colleagues, patients and friends, with whom he worked and socialized with for decades. Ray was predeceased by his mother, Christine Hulyk, his father, Walter Hulyk, his brothers, Roman and William Hulyk, and his sisters, Lillian Skrypichako and Anne Sudyk. A Celebration of Ray’s Life will be held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 18 Selkirk Blvd., Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with The Reverend Don Hennig Officiating. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We remember the kind support and care you and Dr Hulyk gave us as we recovered from the Pine Lake Tornado. Dr Hulyk would quietly pop in just to see how we were doing. His kind smile helped us through the days of recovery. We are sending you love and appreciation for all you have done to bring comfort and care to this world. A special Doctor who has a very special family! May God grant you comfort and peace.
