Obituary for Dann Lynn Dabels

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Mr. Dann Lynn Dabels of Red Deer, Alberta, at his home on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at the age of 61 years. Dann was born on April 28, 1959 in Barrhead, Alberta, to Paul and Frances Dabels. Dann was a remarkable man. As a child, raised on his family farm in Fort Assiniboine, Alberta, he was his Dad’s helper. In his early teens, he excelled at building tractors. In his late teens, he served as an LDS Missionary in Japan for two years. Later, in his early twenties, he pursued a career in Information Technology. He was a valued employee of Westfair Foods Ltd. and IBM for twenty-six years; he was a very talented Computer Systems Architect. He enjoyed reaching out to other Software Designers, just learning the ropes. Often, he would get up at 5:00 a.m. to tutor colleagues in Halifax; who thought it was 8:00 a.m. everywhere else on the planet. He never turned anyone away – always eager to extend a hand up. What should Dann’s descendants know about him? He was a savant with numbers, theorems, graphs and formulas. Playing with them was child’s play. Those numbers would literally dance around his pencil, until they accomplished the task at hand. In a small village schoolhouse, he learned the fundamentals of math. Using those skills, he built a career in a demanding technical field, he became the master of his discipline and teaching was his calling. Dann will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Donna (nee Patterson); his first wife, Karen and their sons, Jordan, Michael and Brandon; as well as numerous family members and dear friends. Dann’s family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to his co-workers for their generous donation to the Autism Society. In his work life, he interfaced with people he respected and admired. Cremation entrusted to Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. If desired, Memorial Donations in Dann’s honor may be made directly to the Autism Society at www.autism-society.org. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
