Obituary for George Stewart Campbell
George Stewart Campbell of Red Deer, Alberta passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the age of 81 years, following a seven year battle with cancer.
George was born on October 17, 1937 in Fort Vermilion, Alberta. He will be sorely missed by his wife, Esther; son Sandy (Lana) Campbell and children, Joel and Emily; daughter Kathryn (Telley) Ferguson, and children, Skylee and Tristan; and daughter, Kim (Rob) Tenhove and son, Samuel. He will also be sadly missed by his sister, Jean Campbell, of Edmonton, as well as his extended family and many friends.
In 1963, George moved to Calgary where he began working for the Calgary School Board. Two years later, he married his wife, Esther Otterbein from Okotoks and the two of them lived in Calgary for seven years, in which time he completed five years of teaching education.
In 1970, he moved with his wife to Arctic Bay, NWT, where both of them taught in an Inuit school for one year, George assuming his first position as school principal. In 1971, the couple moved to Europe and Asia, eventually traveling through the Sahara Desert to Nigeria, Togo, Ghana and the Ivory Coast. In the spring of 1972 another move was made to London, England, where George secured a teaching position and where their first child was born. Two years later they moved back to the eastern Arctic, this time to Igloolik, a small community near north Baffin Island where two daughters were born. In 1978 the young family moved to Red Deer where George started a teaching position at Central Elementary School. Less than two years later he accepted a principalship and served there for the next 20 years.
After retiring in 1998, George began volunteering at Sunnybrook Farm Museum until he was no longer able to be involved because of his deteriorating health. It was during this period of time that he also became very involved in missions, making seven trips to Romania helping to build schools for Roma children. He also served on the Mission Board at CrossRoads Church for much of this time.
