Obituary for Douglas Roderick Spurrell

SPURRELL, Douglas
1934 – 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of “our character”, Douglas Roderick ‘Doug’ Spurrell at the Red Deer Hospice on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the age of 84. He was born in Montreal on October 8, 1934. He was married to Ruth Tooke for fifty-three years, until her passing in 2006. Doug missed his lovely dancing partner so much and he was a great support to her, especially in her later years. He and Ruth moved to Calgary from Montreal in 1975, then to Olds in 1997 and lived in Red Deer since 1998. Doug was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather; full of fun and never hesitating to pull one’s leg or share sage advice. Doug loved working at Air Canada for the majority of his working life. He started on the ramp in Dorval Airport in 1959 and worked his way up to a Commissary Buyer position in Calgary. He retired in 1991, having worked for Air Canada for 31 years. At the age of 77, Doug got a part time job in menswear at the Bay and truly enjoyed the camaraderie of the staff and customers until December 2014. In the thirteen years since losing Ruth, he embraced this new chapter in his life by indulging his love of travel, golfing and taking on the challenges of technology. Doug loved life - he was outgoing, young at heart, appreciative of new experiences, great food and had a quirky sense of humour. Our family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Red Deer Regional Hospital Center, for their caring support over these past few years, with special thanks to Dr. Glady. We would also like to thank the Red Deer Hospice for the gentle and loving care they provided at the end of Doug’s journey. Doug will forever live in the hearts of his son Gary and daughter-in-law Candace, his grandson Vincent and granddaughter-in-law, Deanna. He will also be greatly missed by Candace’s extended family, his many friends and colleagues and his relatives from both the Tooke and Spurrell families. Doug was predeceased by his wife Ruth, his mother Frieda, his father John and his brother John. A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home on Monday, May 13, 2019 @ 12:30 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Doug’s honour may be made to the Central Alberta Women’s Shelter at www.cawes.com or to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com
