It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Leslie ‘Bruce’ Wood of Red Deer, Alberta, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, February 15, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Bruce was born and raised in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, where he helped on the family farm. In his late teens, he moved to Ontario and worked making hockey sticks for Canada Cycle & Motor Co. Bruce met his future wife, Doreen Hillier, and the couple was married on May 26, 1961. After their son, Kevin was born, they moved back to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where son, Brian was born. But once again, there was a calling to the West. Bruce moved his small family to Calgary, Alberta; where he worked for CCIL Farm Equipment, as well as part-time employment at a Texaco Service Station. This is when they had their third son, Clark. From the Calgary, they moved with CCIL around the Drumheller Area. From there, it was back to Saskatchewan, where Bruce started to buy grain from U.G.G. in Forgan. He moved to his own Elevator in McMorran, and stayed there until he bought out the Pool Elevator, his competition. Wanting a new challenge, Bruce moved in 1974 to Red Deer, Alberta, where he found his niche in Construction, doing mostly suspended ceilings and drywalling. Bruce worked into his early seventies. Not one to sit around, he started a Fertilizer Truck for a few seasons. Bruce loved to stay busy: he spent much of his free time at the Lone Pine Clay Target Club; shooting, pulling targets and maintenance jobs, staying active for as long as he could. Bruce will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, Kevin (Jeannie) Wood of Penhold, Alberta and Clark (Tracey) Wood of Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Elizabeth Wood; a sister, Ethel; his brothers, Ralph, Allen and Douglas; and a son, Brian. A Celebration of Bruce’s Life will be held at a later date.
