Obituary for Mart Marie Koppenol

Mart Marie  Koppenol
Mart Marie Koppenol was born on October 12, 1939 in Nieuwveen, Holland. He and his family left Holland and arrived at their final destination of Coronation, Alberta on December 24, 1948. Mart worked on the family farm and later on his own farm. He married Grace Lotthammer on May 11, 1963. They had three children, John, Rhonda (Robert) and Jerry (Doris). He moved his family to Hanna where he was employed by Knoblauch Construction. He later formed his own company, Mart’s Construction. Mart became a Canadian Citizen in 1977 but he never forgot his Dutch Heritage. After 18 years of marriage, Mart and Grace divorced, and Mart married Gloria Yake on August 14, 1981. Her daughter, Dana (Terry) fit right in with the Koppenol Clan. Mart built many houses in the Hanna area. Mart became our bionic man after he had two knee replacements and one shoulder surgery. Mart and Gloria moved to Red Deer after Gloria retired from teaching in 2011. Mart gave up wood carpentry, gardening and cooking, all the things that he loved, in the later stages of his life. He spent the last year and a half being cared for primarily by Gloria, Hospital Staff, Home Care and finally the wonderful staff at Red Deer Hospice. Mart died peacefully on December 11, 2018 after a long struggle with Liver Cirrhosis and Liver Cancer. He will be remembered and loved always by his four children and his eight grandchildren including; Kevin(Nicole) and Jeffrey Koppenol, Macie, Tyson and Noah Welch , Alex Koppenol, Calvin and Jeroen Stagg. He will also be remembered by his special friends, Spencer (Tammy) Keeping, their children Tori, and Tyler; as well as his wonderful neighbour Julie and her son, Nathan. He was predeceased by his father, Mart, his mother, Johanna, a brother, Cor and a sister, Johanna Tanaschyk. A Memorial Service will be held at the Parkland Funeral Home in Red Deer, Alberta on May 4th, 2019 at 11:00. Memorial Donations in Mart’s honour may be made to the Red Deer Hospice at www.reddeerhospice.com or a charity of your choice.
