Life Story for Merla Vivian Fawcett (Johnston)

Merla was born on October 19, 1934, in Maidstone, Saskatchewan to Hazel and David Johnston. She was the third of eight children and the oldest girl. She moved to the Red Deer area in 1939 and her family to the Archibald farm before moving into Red Deer to the West Park area. She attended her school years in Red Deer and then went to work for Alberta Government Telephones (AGT) in Westaskiwin, Calgary and Red Deer. She met the love of her life, Glenn, in 1952 and they were married on December 15, 1956, at Gaetz Memorial United Church in Red Deer. They lived in Calgary for a short time, and Merla worked at CKXL Radio as a receptionist. They welcomed the arrival of their fist daughter, Glenda Lori, in 1960. Glenn was then transferred to Brooks, Alberta in 1961, and in 1964, they welcomed their second daughter, Judith Merla. They then moved a few more times before finally settling back in Red Deer in 1969. Mom was a stay-at-home mom for quite a few years, until Glenda and Judi got a little older. She then went back to work part-time at Shores Jewelers in downtown Red Deer, and then at Sears until her retirement. Merla had many health issues over the years, but with her spirit and determination to persevere helped her to overcome many things. She was blessed with five grandchildren who she loved and cared for deeply. She always loved spending time with them and hearing their stories. Merla also loved spending time with her friends and family, going camping out West, having card nights, and just enjoying being with them. She was also an avid reader and could have opened her own library with all the books that she accumulated over the years!
