Mr. Samuel ‘Sam’ Peter van der Weide of Onoway, Alberta passed away peacefully at Bethany CollegeSide, Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Sam was born on January 14, 1935 at Bolsward, Friesland, The Netherlands to Jacobus van der Weide and Margaretha Siemensma. Sam was the twelfth of fourteen children. He came to Canada on his own in 1956, and returned to The Netherlands in 1961, to find a wife. Sam married Cathy Appelman on May 10, 1963. Shortly after they were married, they moved to Canada and settled in the Edmonton Area. He worked for the City of Edmonton for several years. His favourite place was on the farm, chasing his grandchildren and his goats. He was very generous and often gave produce from his garden to the local Foodbank in Onoway. His last days were spent in Red Deer at Bethany CollegeSide, close to his wife. He always enjoyed having a good time and lots of laughter. Sam will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Cathy; his daughter, Margaret (Calvin) Ramstad of Lacombe, Alberta; his grandchildren, Katy (Kris) Esselink, Jessica (Joel) Zylstra and Dylan Shewchuk (Josee) and his great grandchildren, Adelyn, Bennett, Connor, Duncan, Samuel, Ethan, Caleb and Benjamin; as well as many other family members and dear friends.
