Obituary for Ernie Helmut Penner

Ernie passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 85 years in Calgary, Alberta, on Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 with his family at his side. Ernie was born in the Manitou, Manitoba area on December 30th,1931; the third born of five sons and two daughters from John and Elizabeth Penner. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Peter, Paul, and Alfred; and sister Elizabeth Jensen. Ernie is survived by his son Fred, daughter Jennifer, former wife Jean Jones, as well as his older brother John in Collingwood, Ontario, youngest sister Helen of the Ponoka area, and many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and work associates. He worked as a carpenter for his entire working career throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories. During the years that Ernie was raising his children in Red Deer, Alberta, he enjoyed travelling and camping extensively throughout Canada and the United States, metal detector prospecting, and relaxing with a good Cuban cigar. During his retirement years in Edmonton, Alberta, and Calgary, Alberta, Ernie enjoyed spending time with his children, listening to music, reading. and watching NHL and NFL games and curling. He also grew to have a love for animals and could be found enjoying the companionship of his cat, and feeding the many birds and squirrels in his backyard.
