Life Story for Peter Hans Schulz

June 9, 1935 – Berlin, Germany
November 11, 2017 – Red Deer, Alberta
Kind Heart, Gentle Soul, Helpful Hands
Born in Berlin to Martha (Krabbe) and Johann Schulz. Peter along with his mother and sister moved often during the war years, settling in Sweden at the end of the WWII. Peter attended an agricultural college in rural Sweden before emigrating to Canada at the age of 19 where he worked on a farm in Ontario and then moved west to the Fogelvik Farm in Innisfail, Alberta. There he met Gordon Jorgensen and his younger sister Glenna, who he did not know at the time would become his future wife. While working for a construction company in Calgary, he reconnected with friends from Sweden The three friends went on a gold-seeking mission up north and spent an adventurous six weeks paddling the Nahanni river. They returned without any gold but with the wealth of a lifetime experience under their belts. Peter then worked as a surveyor while romancing Glenna Jorgensen. They enjoyed an extended honeymoon in Europe, which was the beginning of their many travels together. Over 54 years of marriage they made several trips to Europe as well as traveling to China, Cuba, Mexico, Indonesia, and throughout Canada and the United States. Peter and Glenna settled in Calgary where he worked for many years as an equipment manager in the Physical Education Department for the University of Calgary. His friendly smile is to be remembered by many students and staff. Peter continued to enjoy hiking and camping in the mountains. He also loved the B.C. coast, especially Gabriola Island, which became a summer home for the family. After retirement, Peter and Glenna moved back to Glenna’s childhood farm near Olds, Alberta and spent many winters in Mexico. Peter had many interests- gardening, woodworking, dancing, swimming and skiing. He loved good chocolate, hearty rye breads and fine cheeses. He was a big jazz fan, with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong being amongst his favourites. Peter was a loving father to his four children: Paul (m. Jill Arnusch), Rita (m. Andrew Fields), Karen (m. Ian McAllister) and Mark. He was a devoted grandfather to Alex, Emily, Sarah, Meghan, Callum and Lucy. Peter is also survived by his loving wife, Glenna, his sister Tatjana Cosko and in-laws Dagmar Schulz, Martin and Rosalie Jorgensen, Shirley Jorgensen, Helen Jorgensen and Joyce Jorgensen. He was predeceased by his brother Paul Schulz and in-laws Rick Cosko, Ove Jorgensen, Gert Jorgensen and Gordon Jorgensen. The family would like to thank the staff at Extendicare Michener Hill.
