Mr. William Edwin 'Bill' Payne passed away peacefully at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre, Lacombe, Alberta on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the age of 96 years. Bill was a veteran of World War II but he was also a husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Bill was born on January 6, 1921 in a railcar at Erskine, Alberta to William and Verda Payne. During his first few years of life, his family moved from Erskine to Castor, and to the Sylvan Lake District, before settling in Rocky Mountain House in 1925. Bill spent many hours playing and fishing with his siblings, and helping his father around the home/farm before joining the military and heading out for a life of his own. While in England in 1942, he met and married the woman of his dreams. Bill and Daphne married in 1943 and moved back to Canada in 1945, to share 72 amazing years together. Bill and Daphne had five children, William Vaughn, Veronica Lynn, George Edwin, Chester David and Andrew Kevin. The couple eventually settled outside of Alix, Alberta; where they farmed until their retirement in 1985, when they moved into Lacombe. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his son, Bill (Barbara), daughter, Veronica, sons, George (Gail) and Chester (Marie), 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife, Daphne, a son, Andrew, a son-in-law, Jeff, along with a brother, Alfred and three sisters, Meta, Blanche and Elda. Bill's gentle and caring spirit will be missed by all. A Graveside Service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery, Lacombe, Alberta on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. and a funeral luncheon will follow at the Parkside Alliance Church, 5846 – 50 Avenue, Lacombe at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com.
