Obituary for James John "Jack" McLean

James ‘Jack’ McLean of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away peacefully at Extendicare Michener Hill in Red Deer on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the age of 86 years. Jack was born on January 6, 1929 near Unity, Saskatchewan. Jack and Dolores married in 1952 and by 1958 had welcomed four sons, one who died in infancy, and moved seventy-two times following the drilling rigs. They then settled in Lloydminster and had four more children before moving to Burstall, Saskatchewan in 1964. After thirteen years in Burstall, Jack and Dolores lived in Yellowknife, Taylor, Fort St. John, and Yorkton, and then retired to Camrose in 1994. Jack was a kind, quiet, patient man and a role model who never missed work, believed in education and loved his family. He spent many evenings in Burstall, earning his High School Diploma and then his First Class Power Engineering by correspondence. He had an amazing ability to concentrate while seven kids roamed the house. Jack never stopped reading and researching topics that interested him. The kids in Burstall referred to the McLean house as ‘Jack’s Place’ showing how much Jack and Dolores made them feel welcome. He loved family camping trips, especially in later years when the grandchildren took turns visiting him around the fire pit. He had a quiet sense of humor and enjoyed Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Tim Conway, and Bob Newhart. Jack loved to golf, always walking the course and worked on his swing all winter. He always helped with dishes, loved puttering in the yard and house, and was the best friend to any dog that came along. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his children, Lory, Kelly, Sharon, Joanne, Brian, and David; and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his sister, Dorothy, as well as numerous other relatives and dear friends. Jack was predeceased by his wife of fifty-eight years, Dolores and two sons, Barry and Robert. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. If desired, Memorial Donations in Jack’s honor may be made directly to Parkinson Alberta at www.parkinsonalberta.ca. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Ashley Paton, Funeral Director at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
