Mr. Gordon ‘Gord’ Birbeck of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away quietly at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the age of 67 years. Gord was born on June 7, 1947 at Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He lived briefly in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec before making Edmonton, Alberta his permanent home in 1957. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta, he continued to the University of Toronto, where he received a Masters Degree in Health Administration. Gord returned to Alberta to join the Red Deer General Hospital, first as a liaison during the construction of the new Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. He remained at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, where he was responsible for numerous Hospital Departments throughout his career. Along with travelling with Heather, reading and sports were a big part of Gord’s life. The Oilers have lost a long time supporter. Gord will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-three years, Heather; his daughter, Liz (Bryce) Walker and their children, Isla and Beckett; and son, Mike. He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Norm (Irene) Birbeck; his uncle, Norm Willis; brother-in-law, Mart (Wendy) Byar, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loyal friends. Gord was predeceased by his brother, Bruce. A Celebration of Gord’s Life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, December 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to extend their grateful thanks to Dr. Hulyk and the Staff of Unit 33 for their unwavering care and compassion.
